What's happening in Term One 2012
Reading:
Students will have guided reading session with the teacher. When not working with the teacher the students will have a selection of activties to do. These could be doing SOLO Thinking Maps, character, setting, plot, giving opinions, justifying reasons, skimming and scanning, note taking and making and answering inferential and literal questions from there chosen piece of text.
Writing:
This term students will looking into writing Autobiography to start with. This is where the students will choose four areas of intrest to them for example sports, family, food etc and will write about each of their chosen headings. This is a great way for the students to learn about each other as well as for the teacher .
Following on from this the students will be writing autobiography about a famous person or a person that is special to them. This can range from a famour new zealnder or even could be just their mum or dad!!!! This is a great follow on from writing about themselves to writing about someone elses life. This alo links will with our topic.
Maths:
Students to start the year off will be looking at statistics. They will be learning about how to gather data, collate data and interpret data. Students really enjoy statistics as they learn a lot of new skills as well as learn about what people's favourite colour is, favourite sport, favourite food etc.
Follwing on from this students will be grouped according to data in which has been collated. They will be focusing on number to start with ( Knowledge) and then moving into addition and subtraction where they will be taught how to use varying strategies when solving maths problems. Students will be working with the teacher as well as doinf varying maths activties.
Topic/ Integration: KIWIANA ( What it is to be a New Zealander)
As teachers we feel that it is very important for the students to learn about New Zealand and what makes ths country unique as well as where the students fit into New Zealand. Some of the key areas of learning will be students looking at their toku pepeha, family tree, famour new zealanders, new zealand icons, beach safety, sunsmart etc.
Students will be learning alot of new skills for example using the SOLO maps in order to extend their learning and become reflective thinkers. They will also learn how to look for key words, skimming and scanning for specific information.
Syndicate Sport / P.E:
In P.E students will start the term off with the focus of small balls. They will learn how to throw, catch and trap small balls while stationary as well as moving . These skills will be reinforced throug out the sessions which will lead on to students playing a variety of games and sports for example cricket, softball, rounders etc. In syndicate sport this is very much based on playing varying sports and allowing the students the opportunity to give the varying sports ago. This is a time that is also about sportsmanship and fair play. Please note Year Three do not start swimming till Week 5-6 and there will be a note that will be sent home closer to the time.
ICT:
Students will using varing computer programmes this term. It will be integrated in most learning areas. The students will also have the use of the Interactive Whiteboard in the class. Room 22 students will be using a variety of ICT programmes this term in order to re fresh and continue to develop their skills.
Art:
Art this term will be based around Kiwiana where they will be using varying media.
