Integrated Unit: What's Under My Skin?

Our integrated unit this term is about students understanding how different actions effect what is underneath our skin. They will learn about how and why we need to look after ourselves through healthy eating, exercise and protecting our own body.

Te Reo Maori

Integrated with Te Reo, students will learn the names of body parts in Te Reo Maori and about their Hauroa as their overall wellbeing.

Dance

We will be having alot of fun this term learning about Dance. Students will learn about how they can use different speeds, body parts, movements and heights of dance to represent chosen songs.

Health and PE

Our Health focus will be tied in with our Keeping ourselves Safe and our Integrated unit.

Our focus for Physical Education this term will be Large Ball skills. Students will learn and develop skills needed for throwing, catching, passing and trapping large balls. These skills are necessary for playing games with large balls such as basketball, netball or soccer. We will have 2 PE lessons a week (Tuesday and Wednesday) to focus on these skills.

Visual Arts

The other Year 2 classes were so impressed with our Very Hungry Caterpillar assembly item artwork, that the year 2 teachers have decided to use Eric Carle's style of illustration as a model for collages. Students will be painting pieces of paper, cutting them and forming them into collages. The end products will look similar to the pictures in the Very Hungry Caterpillar. Students will learn to consider size, shape and layout while planning their collages. They will need to ensure their peices are stuck down firmly and formed to show clear pictures.

Geometry

To begin the term, we will be learning to identify 2D and 3D shapes. We will be looking in the classroom and at home to see which of these shapes we can see. We will be learning to describe the number of faces (for 3D shapes), corners and sides each shape has. Students will be learning about the nets that make up a 3D shape.

Students will be cutting 2D shapes to form a picture collage made of these shapes.

Writing

This term we will be focusing on procedural text, which is writing that explains how to do something. Students will be challenged to write instructions including nouns, action verbs, time sequence words, adverbs, commands and technical langauge. They will also inlcude pictures or diagrams.

Students will also learn to write explainations, explaining why or how something happens. They will learn to research a chosen topic, group their ideas in paragraphs, use key topic words and write factually in present tense.

Reading

Children have been placed into reading groups based on the results of their tests in March, which were discussed during parent interviews last term.

Between Monday to Thursday, children who havent read with me that day will select a reader from their group’s book box to take home, read, then bring back the following day and put into the group box at the back of the classroom.

I do not allow children to take home a new reader if they have left their book bag or previous reader at home.

Please be aware that readers from these boxes are always two levels below your child’s guided reading age, to encourage confidence with reading independently.

If your child brings home a reader read during a group lesson, then this will be at his/her guided level. These need to be returned to the blue basket next to my desk.

If your child finds the text easy to read, it would be supportive to ask a variety of questions which test his/her comprehension of the text.

 Homework

Homework will continue to consist of...

Reading the reader sent home between Monday to Thursday each night. No readers are taken over the weekend.

Spending time on Mathletcs...both set tasks and live Mathletics.

Another activity related to our learning program.

 Library books

Our Library day will continue to be on Tuesday. On Tuesdays, your child will issue two books to read during the week at school and/or home and then return the following Tuesday.

General

It is important that children arrive at school before 8:55am. When the first bell goes, students need to put their hats in their bags and sit on the mat ready for the roll.

All children need to bring a filled and named water bottle to school each day.

Children need bring their book bag to school each day so that readers and notices can be transported easily.  It may be helpful to check your child’s book bag each day for notices.
